Adjunct Life - Or, Do I Get a Stapler Too?

Creating Assignments
Overview

There are hundreds of assignments that have been developed to achieve course goals and objectives. With the move toward competencies, many course objectives have been "pre-decided" by your department or administration. You may not get to choose your course's objectives, but you can certainly use your creative gifts and talents in designing ways to meet and assess student achievement of those objectives.

Here are some rules of thumb:
  • Assignments should reflect the stated goals of your syllabus, course objectives and personal teaching philosophy.

  • Combine the creation of  your assignment with designing a rubric that assesses the achievement of those goals, objectives and philosophy.

For the adjunct, major assignments may have already been developed as well as their rubrics. There may be some "wiggle room" within these assignments to allow for a creative way to deliver the assignments either online or in class.  You might consider a creative end-product that will accomplish the assignment's stated goals and objectives, like presenting a portfolio or eFolio or have your students write a quiz or design a lecture.
